A Path to Neighborhood Power

Atlantic Mills — a former textile factory turned commercial business and artist hub — is in the heart of Olneyville on Manton Avenue, next to the Woonasquatucket River.

The building was put up for sale in August 2024. After months of a deal pending, the sale closed on June 17, 2025. In response to the potential sale of the Atlantic Mills, PPS set out to capture the life of this unique Providence landmark today through stories about many of the building’s current occupants and essays about the role the Mills have played in the Olneyville community through time. Read more about our process behind this project on our About page and find more resources on Atlantic Mills here.

1863

Architect Clifton A. Hall is commissioned to design a new, larger mill.

1871

1884

Wage reductions lead at least 100 weavers to quit their jobs.

1890

A weavers’ strike ends quickly, a union is proposed but the vote does not carry. Over the course of the next decade, Atlantic Mills becomes the largest worsted/textile company in Providence with 2,000+ employees and on-site workers’ housing; its textiles are mainly used in women’s clothing.

1893

Wage reductions cause 5,000 workers in nine mills in Olneyville to strike, but Atlantic Mills laborers do not participate. Mill campus expands, adding a building.

1895

Weavers’ wage cuts of more than 20% lead to a 3-month strike at Atlantic Mills. A local chapter of the Textile Union is formed at Atlantic Mills.

1900

Atlantic Mills begins to manufacture khaki. Mill campus expands again, adding another building in 1899. The same year, the U.S. Census shows that nearly 2 million children work in mills across the country.

1919

A 3-month strike at Atlantic Mills is initiated by the spinners, advocating for an 8-hour work day.

1953

Textile production in the Mills shuts down.

1954

The Brynes family begins buying sections of the mill complex.

1985

Establishment of the flea market, precursor to today’s Big Top Flea.

2001

Atlantic Mills is listed in Providence’s Industrial and Commercial Buildings landmark district, affording the complex some protection from demolition or major alterations.

2009 – 2025

Atlantic Mills is listed in Providence Preservation Society’s Most Endangered Places List five times.

2022

Owners Howard and Eleanor Brynes LLC begin negotiating with the Providence Redevelopment Agency about the future of the building.

2024

The Mills are put back up on the market after negotiations with the Providence Redevelopment Agency fall through. Private developers initiate a sale with Howard and Eleanor Brynes LLC. Renters in the building form the Atlantic Mills Tenants Union.

2025

Atlantic Mill’s ownership changed hands after being in the Brynes family for decades. Atlantic Mills RI LLC closes on the property June 17, 2025.
